But it was not till the Napoleonic period that it became a garment of high fashion, the style being set by the Empress Josephine after she had received, it is said, a gift of two pieces from Napoleon to whom they had been presented by the Khediv of Egypt. For the next 60 years, the shawl was an indispensable adjunct to the wardrobe of every fashionable woman in Europe, particularly in France. And, this was the period of the greatest productivity in the industry in Kashmir, as well of the greatest change and development in design.
